A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
