Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
