European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
