Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question particular calls from the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
